Review of Virgin Hotel London-Shoreditch: Branson’s Innovative New Destination with a Rooftop Pool

Located at Number 45 Curtain Road, the Virgin Hotel London-Shoreditch has undergone multiple transformations over the past decade, shifting from the Curtain boutique hotel to the Mondrian, and now to Richard Branson’s inaugural hotel in London. The establishment features a trendy faux-industrial aesthetic reminiscent of New York City’s Meatpacking District, highlighted by its red brick exterior paired with Crittall windows. Inside, guests are welcomed by a vibrant atmosphere, including a striking red carpet in the lobby, eye-catching Smeg fridges in vivid colors, and terracotta headboards in each room. The hotel’s communal spaces reflect the playful spirit of the Virgin brand well, showcasing Hidden Grooves, a listening bar filled with vinyl records, and the rooftop venue featuring the Blue Marlin beach club alongside a small pool. The staff members are friendly and stylish, eager to share insights about local attractions and dining options.

Overall Score 7/10

Rooms and Suites

Score 8/10: Known as “Chambers” within Virgin lore, there are 120 rooms available, each featuring striking postbox-red doors with brass knockers. The room options range from the compact 22 sq m chamber kings to the extravagant Sir Richard’s penthouse flat, complete with ample entertainment space. The hotel also boasts spacious grand chambers and 13 additional suites, many of which offer attractive street views.

The sixth-floor accommodations come with generous terraces, ideal for people-watching in this vibrant area of London. Every room includes the signature Virgin lounge bed, modeled after the Upper Class seats of Virgin Atlantic, featuring cozy fabric nooks at each corner. Guests can also appreciate hand-woven rugs from the Eve Branson Foundation, which supports Moroccan female artisans. All bathrooms are designed for luxury, equipped with steam showers, and the larger suites boast roll-top baths in the bedroom. One-bedroom suites include sofa beds for children, although the ambiance is decidedly adult-oriented.

Score 7/10: Hidden Grooves is a hybrid space that serves as both a listening bar and a tribute to Virgin memorabilia, allowing patrons to play their records on Technics turntables. This stylish venue features a chic green terrazzo bar and red velvet stools, with powerful wooden Westminster speakers that can be heard throughout the area. The evenings are energized by DJs spinning vinyl, while guests enjoy signature cocktails, such as a spicy margarita inspired by the Sex Pistols’ iconic track. The bar also offers a variety of small plates, from Korean fried cauliflower to sliders and tuna tartare, ensuring diners feel well-fed.

On the seventh floor, the extravagant Blue Marlin serves as both a members’ club and the restaurant area, complete with a fairy-lit terrace. Breakfast options are served here for guests whose rates include meals, featuring a basic selection of items like a full English breakfast, avocado toast, and yogurt with granola. When the sun is shining, the rooftop, which includes a 32C pool, offers stunning views of the City’s skyline, evoking a sense of San Antonio rather than Shoreditch.

Amenities and Facilities

Score 7/10: Blue Marlin also manages the basement club that features an independent entrance on nearby Scrutton Street. As this is a separate operation, hotel guests do not automatically gain access. Additionally, there is a well-equipped gym adorned in funky green and black stripes, which includes cardio machines, weights, and three treatment rooms, available to both Blue Marlin patrons and hotel guests.

Location

Positioned in the trendy area bordered by Shoreditch High Street, Old Street, and Liverpool Street, the hotel offers easy access to numerous bars and clubs along Great Eastern Street. Shoreditch High Street and Liverpool Street stations are just a ten-minute stroll away, making it a lively location although not ideal for those seeking tranquility.
