Planning a family trip to Orlando during the summer holiday often comes with a hefty price tag. However, last-minute bookings can lead to budget-friendly options, especially if you choose accommodations outside the theme parks’ hotels. While it’s hurricane season in Florida, the central city rarely experiences severe weather, making it more likely that you’ll encounter occasional heavy showers amid generally warm and sunny weather with temperatures reaching the low 30s Celsius.

• Explore our comprehensive Orlando travel guide

Your stay could be at the Avanti International Resort on International Drive, conveniently located just a ten-minute drive to Universal Studios Florida and 15 minutes to Walt Disney World Resort. A seven-night room-only package, including round-trip flights from Gatwick with Norse Atlantic UK, is priced at £551 per person for four travelers, departing on July 30. This package includes a small under-seat bag and a 10kg cabin bag, and an additional 15kg hold bag can be added for £93 return. An Uber ride from the airport takes approximately 30 minutes and costs about £30, or you can opt for the Lynx 42 bus, which runs every 20 minutes and stops right by the hotel for just £1 (golynx.com).

The hotel features 652 rooms arranged around an expansive outdoor pool area adorned with palm trees, waterfalls, and a sandy beach zone. Inside, amenities include an arcade, a coffee shop serving Starbucks, and an all-day café with pizza options, children’s meals, and in-room snacks. The rooms are designed with a modern aesthetic, highlighting chocolate brown wood and cream-colored walls. Each room also comes equipped with a mini refrigerator, and there are several supermarkets within a ten-minute drive, including a large Walmart where you can find a variety of Disney-themed merchandise suitable for budget-friendly souvenirs.

Transportation to the theme parks is economical as well. The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle service to both Disney and Universal, though reservations are required and must be made 24 hours in advance. Because visiting both parks in a week can be challenging and costly, it’s advisable to choose one. Disney World spans 43 square miles with four theme parks and two water parks; a new nightly parade will debut this July (ticket prices are £467 for ages 3-9 and £484 for over-10s for a 14-day pass; disneyholidays.co.uk). Universal Studios includes one water park and three theme parks, featuring the newly opened Epic Universe (prices are £435 for ages 3-9 and £444 for over-10s for a 15-day ticket; universalorlando.com).

If you decide to skip the major theme parks or want a relaxing day, there are numerous attractions nearby. Within a 15-minute walk, visit Madame Tussauds (£22; madametussauds.com), Sea Life Orlando Aquarium (£22; visitsealife.com), or ride the 400-foot tall Ferris wheel at Icon Park (£22; theorlandoeye.com). The Pointe Orlando outdoor mall also offers diverse dining options, a cinema, and a virtual reality center. Additionally, the world’s largest McDonald’s features a two-story play area.

Within just half an hour’s drive, consider an exhilarating airboat ride to spot alligators in Orlando’s swamps (£41; spiritoftheswamp.com) or enjoy gentle hiking trails, bobcat and bald eagle spotting, and scenic lakefront views at the Tibet-Butler Nature Preserve (free; orangecountyfl.net).

Details of Your £551 Per Person Package

• Return flights from Gatwick to Orlando, departing July 30
• Seven nights’ room-only accommodation at Avanti International Resort (thomascook.com)

If your budget allows, you might opt for

The £1,000 Luxury Experience

For those willing to spend a bit more, consider the new Terra Luna Resort at Universal, which features complimentary transportation to Universal’s parks and one hour of early admission with valid tickets. The resort boasts an expansive pool area, a café, a restaurant, and outdoor films at night. Rooms feature a space theme with blue galaxy murals and come outfitted with two double beds for a family of four. You can also charge in-park purchases back to your room. Details: seven nights’ room-only from £996 per person for four, including flights (tui.co.uk).

The £1,500 Disney-Focused Adventure

If you’re inclined towards Disney, consider the All-Star Music Resort located near Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This vibrant, wildlife-themed hotel offers a range of family-friendly accommodations alongside a flexible food court. Guests also benefit from free shuttle services throughout the Disney complex, including to Disney Springs. A 14-day pass is included. Details: seven nights’ room-only from £1,510 per person for four, including flights and transfers (kenwoodtravel.co.uk).

Wales is renowned for its stunning landscapes, featuring dramatic coastlines and towering mountains. Visitors are often drawn in by its beauty, but they quickly realize that rain is an almost inevitable part of the experience, leading many to wish they had packed a waterproof jacket.

This persistent rain is now impacting tourism. Despite contributing £3.8 billion annually to the Welsh economy, several businesses reported a decline in visitor numbers due to unfavorable weather conditions in 2024. The reality of enduring relentless rain while on vacation is not appealing to many.

In response, the Welsh government has introduced a £1 million grant program aimed at equipping small to medium-sized tourism businesses with weather-resistant features such as canopies and rain shelters. While some may view this as a modest initiative—no region desires to be primarily recognized for its parking facilities—it represents a positive move. Simple rain shelters could make a significant difference, transforming a less-than-ideal outing into a more pleasant experience.

However, some experts believe the grants may not be sufficient. Dr. Edward Thomas Jones from Bangor University expressed concerns that these minor improvements will hardly address the bigger issue at hand. With the weather expected to become increasingly erratic, even the most basic shelter might not attract tourists.

Indeed, the challenge of making Wales weatherproof is considerable. The task seems daunting—how can one truly protect the outdoors from the elements? Unless tourists arrive in waterproof accommodations, they will likely encounter some rain.

Welsh tourism initiatives often highlight available activities regardless of the climate. For instance, Rhyl boasts a theater, and visitors to the area can explore an underground maze near Eryri (Snowdonia), pottery workshops in Caernarfon, or the unique coal museum in Blaenavon, which may surprise younger visitors.

Across various towns, delightful boutiques await discovery. For those intent on staying dry, Cardiff’s covered arcades, like the historic Castle Quarter Arcades, provide ample shelter. Further afield, once outside the allure of the funicular railway, one might find Aberystwyth’s quaint Bookshop by the Sea, a perfect hideaway.

Nonetheless, it’s crucial to recognize that the unpredictable Welsh weather is part of the region’s allure. Personal experiences often reveal tourists getting soaked on adventures—from scaling Snowdon to exploring the pier in Aberystwyth. Whether during a rain-soaked family trip or a stag weekend, rain is a recurring element in the narrative of many visitors.

Ultimately, the weather shapes this magnificent landscape. The lush greenery is a result of abundant rainfall, while the rugged terrain has been sculpted by countless storms over the centuries. When visiting Wales, avoiding the outdoors means missing the breathtaking scenery and the raw beauty of nature. It’s an experience meant to invigorate the spirit.

The initiative to improve shelters can be viewed as a concession. Instead, why not encourage adventurous tourists willing to face the elements? Perhaps the focus should shift from merely weather-proofing attractions to empowering the resilience of the visitors themselves. A new tourism campaign could promote the spirit of visiting Wales—with a reminder to pack a coat!

Do you cherish the beauty of Wales, rain or shine? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

“Yeehaw!” I shout with exhilaration as I zip along at approximately 20mph, surrounded by thin, towering trees and vibrant foliage beneath me. Despite my fear of heights, I have opted for a zip-line experience in Roatan, an island located off the coast of Honduras, and I’m feeling the adrenaline surge through my veins, blending terror with excitement.

“Awesome job, Mum!” my 20-year-old daughter, Lara, laughs as I land on the platform where she awaits. Her smile is infectious, and it’s clear she is absolutely enjoying herself. However, there’s little time to savor her compliment as she quickly secures her harness for the next zip line, which leads further into the jungle, and moments later, she jumps into the air, shouting “See ya!” as she takes off.

During our thrilling 90-minute adventure, Lara and I join around 15 fellow passengers from Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady for a course featuring ten zip lines that traverse the tropical rainforest. This exciting outing is definitely worth the price (£80 per person) — Lara and I chatter excitedly about our experience as we ride back to the ship in a minibus. We emerge soaked and covered in mud due to the heavy tropical rain that fell that morning, but the thrill of the zip-lining adventure eclipses any discomfort from the weather.

The purpose of this six-day cruise was to share valuable time with Lara during her university reading week, and I hoped it would provide us with memorable experiences together. It was Lara’s first cruise, and she was eager to explore four destinations: the US, Mexico, Honduras, and the Bahamas. I had a slight concern that she might be out of place among an older crowd.

My worries were unfounded. Compared to my previous cruise experiences, Scarlet Lady’s capacity of 2,770 passengers is quite diverse. The ship caters exclusively to adults, with most passengers being Americans, alongside some Brits and Europeans. Passengers’ ages range from their twenties to sixties, showcasing a wonderful array of ethnicities, sexual orientations, and body types. We weren’t the only parent-child duo aboard.

While zip-lining was Lara’s favorite excursion, I relished our visit to the ancient Mayan ruins of Chacchoben in Mexico, dating from AD700 (£78 per person). Although we faced another downpour during this trip, our knowledgeable guide, Diana Garcia, kept spirits high with her entertaining commentary, joking about performing human sacrifices to appease the gods and encourage sunshine, as per the traditions of the ancient civilization. Her insights into the Mayan pyramids and their historical significance provided a captivating experience.

After we dried off and warmed up on board, Lara and I indulged in a three-hour session in the thermal suite of the Redemption spa (£61 per person). Moving around the salt and steam rooms, sauna, and various hot and cool pools was incredibly relaxing, leading me to drift off on the heated marble hammam bench until Lara shook me awake. She wanted to ensure we wouldn’t miss the final part of our spa experience — coating ourselves with “healing” mud. This 15-minute treatment, although messy, left us feeling refreshed and invigorated after a good wash.

Our visits to the spa didn’t end there. On one of our two sea days, we each indulged in a 75-minute massage in the newly introduced spacious treatment room (£220 per person). The therapists catered to our individual requests — I asked for a strong massage, while Lara preferred a lighter touch. Afterwards, we made our way back to our cabin, completely relaxed and free of tension.

The treatment room is one of several enhancements that Scarlet Lady has acquired since its launch in August 2021. Other additions include 24 new suites, six stylish poolside cabanas, a new menu inspired by Chinese cuisine at Razzle Dazzle restaurant, and an updated coffee shop. The previously featured risqué show, Never Sleep Alone, has also been quietly discontinued.

The party atmosphere on board, however, remains as vibrant as ever. We managed to grab a quick bite from the Pizza Place (which is included in the cruise) before glamorizing ourselves for the highlight of the week: Scarlet Night. We had dressed for the occasion, and upon exiting our cabin, we were greeted by a sea of fellow passengers adorned in red. While it may sound gimmicky, it was delightful to see an entire ship enjoying the same theme, heightening the lively ambiance.

After a couple of excellent espresso martinis at the Grounds Club bar (£11 each), we were ready to hit the dance floor in the aptly named Red Room, dancing for nearly four hours as the DJ played an array of hits spanning four decades. After burning off plenty of energy, I logged an impressive 14,500 steps dancing — much to Lara’s amusement — while also finding other passengers eager to join the fun.

However, the following day, I felt the effects of our energetic night with some muscle soreness, making me question the wisdom of signing up for a bungee fitness class — something neither of us had tried before. Thankfully, bouncing around in a harness while attempting various exercises proved so enjoyable that my dancing-related aches were quickly forgotten. Lara and I even managed to attempt an upside-down position taught by the instructor, which wasn’t the most advisable move considering my hangover, but the class concluded before any real repercussions occurred.

Throughout our voyage, we also participated in spin classes and high-intensity interval training, both of which were comparable to classes back in the UK. The ship’s gym was well-equipped, featuring a variety of machines, which ensured we never encountered a wait.

Our focus wasn’t solely on maintaining fitness during the cruise. Our motivation to exercise stemmed from our love for food, with a myriad of dining options available. Our top picks included Extra Virgin, an Italian restaurant renowned for its authentic pasta, and The Wake, cleverly named for its location at the back of the ship.

The Wake is elegantly designed with cream leather seats, plush carpets, and crisp linen, and its food and service rival that of a Michelin-starred restaurant. Lara enjoyed herb-stuffed chicken, while I savored hanger steak served with delicious sides of brown-butter-roasted wild mushrooms, twice-baked potato with caramelized onions, and asparagus accompanied by guindilla sauce. Although some dishes on the menu had additional costs, such as lobster and oysters, sticking to the included options posed no problem.

A standout experience onboard was the breathtaking show Duel Reality, which featured stunning dance and acrobatic performances inspired by the tale of Romeo and Juliet. The cast received a well-deserved standing ovation, and had time permitted, we would have loved to see it again.

Nevertheless, the only letdown during our week occurred due to unexpected weather, leading to a rather chilly experience at Virgin’s beach club on Bimini, Bahamas. The strong winds forced the cancellation of our planned swimming excursion with stingrays at the last moment (£93).

Despite this, we enjoyed a refreshing dip in the turquoise ocean and played in the waves for a bit. Not encountering any stingrays spared me from some pressure regarding a promise I made to Lara to get matching stingray tattoos at Scarlet Lady’s Squid Ink Tattoo Parlor as a memento of our journey (£155 per person).

This would have been my first tattoo, but I reassured Lara that “It’s always worth saving something for next time,” masking my relief about avoiding what could have been a permanent decision.

As I make my way back home from a day of cycling, I learn that the picturesque village of Bibury in the Cotswolds has postponed plans for a new parking facility that would accommodate 130 cars and 10 coaches. Each weekend, the village draws around 20,000 visitors. According to a local resident speaking on BBC Radio Gloucestershire, there is a strong desire to manage the challenges posed by overtourism. The reason for the village’s popularity? Social media has dubbed it an emblem of idyllic English countryside, although I can’t help but think they might be looking in the wrong direction.

I’ve just returned from the true heart of pastoral England, having spent two days cycling through an area rarely seen by coach tours, characterized by rolling hills, quaint farms, and peaceful villages. This region, far beyond the Cotswolds, where the spirit of William Blake feels omnipresent, is Herefordshire, which welcomed 5.87 million visitors in 2023 compared to the 35 million flocking to the Cotswolds.

My initial purpose wasn’t to delve into the essence of English culture; I came primarily to enjoy cycling. In early May, White Heron, a collection of upscale farm accommodations, began offering guided bike tours on the estate belonging to the Hilditch family, located about 20 miles northwest of Hereford.

“There’s excellent cycling around Ludlow and Hereford, but not many discover this area,” Gio Hilditch, Jo’s husband and manager of the farm, explains as I arrive. “This area is known as the Welsh Marches,” he adds, describing a landscape he has explored for three decades with fellow cycling enthusiasts.

Don’t worry; this journey isn’t just about plodding along back roads. For starters, we’ll be riding electric bikes (Ridgeback X2 hybrids, perfect for cycling aficionados). The tour is designed as a leisurely excursion, covering only 30 miles over the two days, with the objective of showcasing this often-overlooked region.

Before we set off, Jo takes pride in showing off her expansive estate. It’s easy to see why; as a fourth-generation farmer managing 700 acres descended from a pioneer of Hereford cattle breeding, she is eager to share what makes this area special. Pedaling through the estate on a tranquil evening, I learn about sustainable poultry farming (did you know chicken manure alone can power three 600kW boilers?) and the details behind cultivating blackcurrants, all of which end up in Ribena.

Paddling through blossom-laden apple avenues evokes memories of weddings. The soft cooing of wood pigeons and the rustling of pheasants in hedgerows create an atmosphere of serene enchantment as the sun sinks below the horizon.

The following morning, under Jo and Gio’s guidance, our group of five, consisting of two avid cyclists and three more leisurely riders, sets forth. From the beginning, the experience is delightful. With cow parsley and bluebells lining the lanes, we cycle side by side until reaching the town of Kington, where charming streets feature a butcher in a blue apron artfully presenting sausages in the window and a hint of patchouli perfume fills the air — a sign of the area’s unique blend of traditional farmers and alternative lifestyle seekers.

What connects these diverse groups is a shared appreciation for this scenic countryside. Just outside Kington, we ride along the crest of the Marches. The Offa’s Dyke Path offers breathtaking panoramic views, with hills fading into a blue-grey mist in the distance. The melody of a skylark fills the air, and during our pause, the absence of engine noise enhances the sense of privilege we feel being here.

Denys Corbett Wilson would know this view, though the modern tranquility would surprise him. In 1912, he bet Damer Leslie Allen on who would be the first to fly from England to Ireland, soaring over Hergest Ridge before making an emergency landing at the now-Powys hamlet of Colva due to engine issues. After waiting for his mechanic, he continued to Wexford, five days later. Allen, meanwhile, vanished after crossing at Holyhead.

Forty years earlier, country diarist Francis Kilvert took a stroll near Colva. Armed with snacks and a flask of wine, he visited a “poor humble dear little whitewashed church” nestled among ancient yews. We follow his route and find historian Joe Kerr (who knows all the jokes) outside St David’s Church: “This structure, thought to be 13th century, was possibly founded by the saint himself,” he explains. The church at Glascwm, just six miles away, likely replaced an earlier Celtic edifice. “This feels like a site that has been in use for centuries.”

Crossing into Wales, we find ourselves enveloped by Celtic enchantment. St Peter’s Church in Bryngwyn boasts kneelers adorned with otters and plough horses, while a prehistoric standing stone bears crosses from a bygone era, all set against a symphony of bird songs.

We continue through winding lanes, crossing the River Arrow on charming bridges reminiscent of childhood stories, back into England toward a farmyard where a rooster scurries into a hay barn. Behind a red-brick wall, we discover a slice of paradise: a hammock sways in a small orchard while swallows swoop overhead, and the Wye Valley unfurls its lush vistas. Corisande Albert and her partner, Angus Grahame, greet us with glasses of refreshing pear cider.

The couple, owners of the Cabalva perry estate, aspire to revive an once-popular beverage. According to Grahame, perry farmers have long used the champagne method since before it was fashionable, stating that “every farm once boasted a little orchard for perry.” Their aim is to make perry accessible again. It’s surprisingly drinkable, being only half the power of wine, making it an excellent summer refreshment — a reminder of how easily we overlook our own traditions.

Might it be the cider or the delightful lunch we shared outdoors on plates from Albert’s kitchen? Or the stunning scenery? Either way, this seems to epitomize the ideal British lifestyle.

Gio’s mention of “Kill Pitch” dampens the mood a bit. Located just past Hay-on-Wye (known for its charming bookshops and a famous ice cream shop), it features a steep incline that has me crank up the electric bike’s power to the max and glide effortlessly up the hill. Sitting on the terrace of a spacious safari tent at Drovers Rest, I enjoy a rehydration beer that I may not fully deserve.

The following day is May Day. In the dim light of dawn, some of us pedal to Arthur’s Stone, an ancient Neolithic tomb perched high in the valley. A group of Morris dancers and a man dressed in leafy costumes greet the sunrise with melodies. Beneath the surface of Merrie England lies a rich seam of pagan heritage.

Who’s to argue with this tradition? Later that morning, the Golden Valley radiates under the warm glow of the sun, while the Skirrid, also known as Holy Mountain, rises dramatically over the surrounding hills. Such scenery inspires a sense of wonder.

The day unfolds with vibrant scenes: hills dotted with blooming apple trees, silver-green willows gracing the Wye during a refreshing dip at Bredwardine, and two elderly gentlemen in braces discussing a friend’s apple-growing in thick local accents: “It’s like a ewe and a lamb, see? The one always knows the other.”

We continue into Pembridge, moving behind the historic New Inn and into a picturesque cobbled square. A picnic bench is elegantly set with a white tablecloth, fine china, a tureen of soup, and a platter of venison pâté accompanied by sourdough bread. Our lunch has arrived.

Honestly, I hesitate to share this experience. Many of the moments we seek when traveling abroad are readily available in Herefordshire — not just breathtaking landscapes, but also rich regional cuisines and the harmony of life within timeless settings. Too often, we overlook at home what we would celebrate elsewhere. Who would have thought that all it took to discover this was a bicycle?

Each year, millions venture to the Cotswolds in search of similar experiences. Luckily, Herefordshire’s efforts at promoting tourism have yet to encompass large coach parking facilities.

Some adventures in life lead you to unexpected destinations, and a hot air balloon ride is certainly one of them.

Our journey began early at 6am, a group of 16 departing from our river ship docked in Luxor. We traversed the Nile on a traditional felucca sailing boat, followed by a van ride to a makeshift airfield on the west side of the city. Colorful balloons, lying deflated on the ground, resembled sad clowns, while large wicker baskets capable of holding 30 passengers rested on their sides. The air buzzed with radio chatter as trucks rolled in, transporting gas to aid in the ascent and assist with the landings.

As we awaited our turn, nerves tingled in the air. We were offered tea and given instructions on how to squat for balance upon landing. Finally, at 7:45am, we lifted off into the brilliant Upper Egypt sky, soaring in a basket buoyed by 500,000 cubic meters of hot air.

The sun steadily rose, brightening the scenery as about fifty other balloons floated gently in the vast sky. The burner overhead roared intermittently as our pilot adjusted our altitude, while the only sounds accompanying us were the breeze and the astonished thoughts of our group, captivated by the stunning views of the Nile below.

This balloon ride marked the culmination of an unforgettable seven-night cruise along the Nile aboard Tui’s newest river vessel, Al Horeya. The aerial perspective offered a cinematic view of many sites we had visited throughout the week. As the basket ascended to 1,000 feet, iconic landmarks such as the Karnak and Luxor temples became visible, framed against the lush greenery of Luxor’s suburbs. To the northwest, the Temple of Hatshepsut’s three grand terraces emerged from the golden sands of the Sahara.

If you’re an adventure enthusiast but perhaps a bit cautious at heart, this cruise offers the perfect blend of excitement and comfort. It was my first trip to Egypt, and a significant draw was Tui’s direct flights from Gatwick or Manchester to Luxor, bypassing the chaotic hustle of Cairo and placing us just a 20-minute drive from the airport.

The Al Horeya’s itinerary followed a round trip from Luxor, heading south towards Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Aswan, intensifying the vibrant sights of Egypt as the journey progressed. Additionally, beyond two included shore excursions, there was the option to participate in others starting from just £32.

Initially, I thought I had experienced the pinnacle of Egyptian artifacts after visiting Tutankhamun’s tomb on the first day. However, I quickly realized that King Tut’s resting place paled in comparison to my newfound favorite: the beautifully detailed burial chamber of Rameses V and VI, where hieroglyphs glistened in gold, captivating my attention and drawing my gaze upwards to the vibrant depictions on the vaulted ceiling.

The Al Horeya was a comfortable floating hotel. Once operated by Jaz Cruises, the ship underwent renovations under Tui’s ownership. With a capacity for 141 passengers across 72 cabins, the interiors were tastefully redone in relaxing whites accented with blues and yellows. Though the bathrooms were compact, the spacious bedrooms benefitted from French windows that opened fully, allowing me to enjoy the picturesque views as charming villages drifted past my cabin and sunsets painted the evening sky.

The ship provided ample recreational space with loungers, a hot tub, swimming pool, and two bars on the top deck. Al Horeya offered an all-inclusive experience; local wines, particularly the drinkable Shahrazade rosé, were generously served, and the overall service was commendable.

An interesting aspect of traveling in Egypt is the common question upon return: “Did you fall ill?” Fortunately, I was spared, thanks to generous helpings of hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes, plus the ship’s kitchen ensured that all food was washed in mineral water—including the omelets!

The dining options consisted of two restaurants. Felucca, an upscale outdoor dining area, featured Egyptian dishes like fattoush salad, mixed grills, and om ali (a milk pudding). The more casual Lazeeza buffet below was a winner, although it took a couple of days to fully savor the flavors, or perhaps the culinary offerings improved as the week went on. I relished delicately presented mussels and smoked salmon starters, hearty mains of sea bass, steak, and spinach tagines, along with ample servings of red velvet cake. Meanwhile, my stash of Imodium pills remained untouched.

Tui rates Al Horeya at five stars, but I would consider it a solid four. The carpeting on the stairways in common areas had some uneven patches, and there wasn’t a turn-down service. If your cabin is near or underneath the observatory lounge on deck four, be prepared to bring earplugs for any quizzes that might extend past bedtime. Fortunately, the all-inclusive service stopped at midnight, so there was no noisy partying at 2am. Sounds from the Nile included late-night music from quayside bars, and due to multiple ships docking, Al Horeya could sometimes be tethered four ships deep, leading to clattering sounds.

Nonetheless, the seasoned local crew followed a well-honed routine: rise early and avoid the crowds, ensuring we often left popular attractions like the Temple of Horus in Edfu by 10am, just as throngs of tourists began arriving to explore the impressive 3rd-century BC shrine.

Onboard, we had the benefit of two knowledgeable Egyptologists, each with distinct styles: Sarwat Hegazy, who was more serious and sarcastic, and Bishoy Michael, who embodied a lighter, playful demeanor. During lunch, Bishoy offered to translate my name into hieroglyphics and proffer a “personality reading.” After rendering my name, he remarked that it signified I disliked those with deceitful tendencies, leading me to tip him £15 for his entertaining effort.

Our week was a delightful blend of relaxation, fun, and mental engagement. Each day brought further understanding of hieroglyphs, recognizing symbols and their meanings.

Visiting Luxor Temple was a stark reminder of the past; where an obelisk once stood, only a stump remained as the original had been relocated to the Place de la Concorde in Paris, prompting thoughts about centuries of plunder.

Bishoy emphasized the importance of preserving Egyptian artifacts, advocating for their return, while Sarwat acknowledged the challenges facing museums and preservation within Egypt, noting that the objects serve as ambassadors, inspiring international visitors to explore the country.

Most shore excursions were half-day trips, with the longest lasting 11 hours, taking us from Luxor to Dendera Temple of Hathor and Abydos. This journey tested our patience as our driver faced some detours due to a road closure, leading us through backroads less frequented by tourists. I found joy in the unexpected moments.

Arriving at Dendera, the walls told stories of humor, anger, and love. In one antechamber, an intimate depiction of Isis and Osiris captured attention, while another panel illustrated a vengeful act against Seth. Sarwat meticulously pointed out that this temple appeared to be the “over-18s” zone, provoking laughter from nearby tourists.

Yet, archaeology in Egypt isn’t limited to risqué tales. In Aswan, I visited the High Dam in the morning, then strolled to the historic Old Cataract Hotel, where Agatha Christie penned “Death on the Nile.” The hotel, now a luxury five-star venue, offered breathtaking sunset views from its terrace overlooking the river.

At Kom Ombo, during one of the free tours, I truly appreciated the ease of a river cruise. We docked around 6pm, the evening air refreshing as I stepped off the ship and into the open temple facing the Nile.

As Bishoy explained an ancient calendar carved into the temple walls, I gazed up at the clear night sky, scattered with stars, with the temple columns framing the celestial scene — Mars glowing red to one side and Jupiter nearby, while Venus and Neptune twinkled behind me.

Like those hot air balloon rides, Nile cruises often land you in moments and places beyond your wildest expectations.

Laura Jackson traveled as a guest of Tui River Cruises, which offers a seven-night all-inclusive package starting from £1,611 per person on the Legends of the Nile itinerary, including two guided tours, flights, tips, and transfers, with an upcoming departure on November 18.

The new automated Entry/Exit System (EES) designed to monitor border crossings in and out of EU countries for travelers from non-member states is set to be implemented starting in October 2025. This system has faced several delays, and will now be introduced in stages due to readiness issues among some member states.

The EES will require most visitors from outside the EU to enter their passport and biometric data upon their first entry into the EU. This information will be stored and cross-referenced with various security databases to enhance safety. The goal is to streamline the entry and exit processes, reducing the reliance on manual checks and eliminating the need for passport stamps. Here’s an overview of what to expect.

Understanding the Entry/Exit System (EES)

The EES aims to monitor the movements of “third-country nationals” within the Schengen zone, effectively replacing traditional passport stamping. Currently, non-EU visitors can stay in the EU for up to 90 days within any 180-day timeframe without a visa, a condition the EES will help enforce through digital records, thereby enhancing border security.

During their initial visit to any of the 29 countries participating in the EES (25 EU states plus Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland), travelers will need to provide their passport information and biometric data. Although initially proposed to gather both fingerprints and photographs, it appears that only one type of biometric data will now be collected.

The collected data will typically be retained for three years. Refusing to provide this information will result in denial of entry.

For future entries, travelers’ details will be matched with their previously recorded information at border points, including one biometric type, likely through a facial scan. The EU has indicated that guests will generally not need to resubmit this data unless under exceptional circumstances. Furthermore, the EES will not apply in Ireland or Cyprus, where traditional checks will continue.

Most border processing will occur upon arrival at EU airports. However, distinct arrangements exist at specific UK locations where “juxtaposed” controls apply: namely at the Dover ferry port, London St Pancras for Eurostar travelers, and Folkestone for LeShuttle services. Passengers using these routes will be able to register their data via the EES before departure.

A new mobile application is being developed by Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, enabling travelers to pre-register their information prior to their journey, although fingerprinting will still need to take place at EU borders. The app is anticipated to be introduced no earlier than the EES’s official launch date.

Scheduled Launch of the EES

The EES is projected to begin operations in October 2025, with the EU expected to announce a precise launch date as the implementation period approaches. However, the commencement may not be simultaneous across all participating nations due to ongoing delays, leading to a phased rollout over six months starting in October.

Countries Involved in the EES

The EES will affect 25 of the 27 EU member countries, with Ireland and Cyprus opting to maintain manual border checks. It will also apply to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, all of which are part of the Schengen area.

In the UK, EES gates will be set up at the Port of Dover, as well as at Eurostar and LeShuttle terminals where passport checks occur before travel.

Implications of the EES for Travelers

In theory, the introduction of the EES should expedite border crossings and simplify the process of entering and leaving European countries. For frequent flyers, it also means passports will have more space, as stamps for each entry will no longer be necessary. However, during the initial stage, travelers using the EES for the first time may experience longer wait times due to the requirement for biometric data submission.

It’s important to note that specific non-EU nationals will be exempt from the EES regulations. This includes individuals with residence permits related to EU citizens, those visiting for certain purposes such as research or training, and holders of valid long-stay visas or local border traffic permits.

Potential Delays During EES Implementation

The Port of Dover, Eurostar, and LeShuttle hubs may face the highest likelihood of delays, a concern raised by officials at these locations. On August 27, 2024, the UK government announced a funding allocation of £10.5 million aimed at aiding preparations for EES implementation at these sites, specifically providing £3.5 million each to help enhance their infrastructure.

Operational Changes at Dover

There will be no designated registration area at Dover. Travelers will follow the usual queue procedures, while agents will approach vehicles to register non-EU citizens and collect biometric data using portable devices. Passengers will remain in their cars, although processing times for each vehicle could increase to about ten minutes after the EES is operational, a significant rise from the current average of 40 to 90 seconds. Additional spaces have been secured near Dover to manage overflow traffic, anticipating potential gridlock during high-demand times.

Operational Changes at London St Pancras

Eurostar will expand its check-in facilities with three designated areas featuring a total of 49 registration booths where travelers must provide their passport and biometric data before proceeding to departures. Furthermore, the company will introduce nine more manual checking booths (bringing the total to 18) along with e-gates and additional personnel to facilitate the EES process. Passengers will need to use these booths for each subsequent trip to verify their details through facial recognition. Eurostar assures that this new procedure will not extend journey times. At Paris Gare du Nord and Brussels Midi, where UK border controls are applied, new kiosks and verification desks will be added for passengers leaving Europe.

Operational Changes at Folkestone

LeShuttle vehicles will enter a designated drive-through area that can accommodate 53 cars simultaneously, containing more than 100 EES registration terminals. Passengers will enter their details here before joining the queue for their service. For repeat journeys, veteran travelers will still need to visit the booths, though the process should become faster with minimal requirements for data input. Getlink, the operator of LeShuttle, claims it can process 700 vehicles and 2,000 passengers per hour, with each car taking approximately five minutes post-EES activation. A similar setup has also been established at Coquelles on the French side.

Operational Changes at European Airports

Travelers will be required to provide their information at designated booths upon arrival at European airports before moving through customs. The integration of biometric systems should ideally ensure a more efficient process at many major terminals, although not all smaller airports will be equipped to handle the anticipated increase in passenger volumes.

Relation of EES to Upcoming EU Visa Waiver Scheme

The EES will operate alongside the anticipated European Travel Information and Authorisation System (Etias), which is planned for launch in late 2026. Non-EU nationals may need to apply for an Etias waiver at a cost of £6, which will be valid for three years or until the passport’s expiration date, and should be requested at least three days prior to traveling.
